The artistic activity of an art teacher is the indispensable part of his practice of transmitting, exchanging and generating knowledge. In the long tradition, dating back to Plato’s Academy, "classical" educational methods were formed and encapsulated in academic formulas. The Socratic stance, opposing the former one, open and interactive, became the paragon of the trans-disciplinary scientific and artistic methods – performative and socially committed. Duchampian revolt has enriched it by the self-definition of an artistic act. Its radical twist can as much approach a complementary stance, embracing many diversified and abundant elements in dynamic (often antagonistic) initial relations, as it proves capable of providing a creative platform for events. The intermediality is a close relative of all of the search and experimentation throughout centuries in the history of art.

The exhibition Teachers. Socrates at Duchamp’s is an attempt to link the academic milieu with Wyspa as an art institution and Alternativas as its strategic, project which we hope to develop in the subsequent 2013-2016 years. This is related to the observation of new global phenomena in the field of artistic pedagogy and its influence on the image and efficiency of the art world. The basic challenge at the Intermedia studies is continual responsiveness to changing phenomena and the demands of the environment, as well as the ability to re-adapt the curricula and syllabuses quickly in the light of dynamic transformations of the information society. Thus, we must look anew at such issues as: the education of an artist and the relations between the structure of Gdańsk Academy and informal links in the artistic milieu which make artists join in groups/ collectives or chose individual work.

For many years, activities aiming at the reinforcement of the trans-media-like approach to education have been carried at The Chair of Intermedia at the Faculty of Sculpture at Gdańsk Academy, where the traditional division into fields of art has been abandoned. Activities in a public space, performances, digital images, and interactivity – these are but a few of the forms used in the artistic pedagogy here. A student can chose a course in media already as a freshman; however, not according to a former curriculum as a speciality or a special course in this field. Now, the procedure for the establishment of the Faculty of Intermedia has been launched. We are now peeping into this artistic milieu just a second before this crucial event.
